Family/Maternity Session
Style Guide

I’m honored you chose me to help you create memories you’ll cherish for a lifetime! I created this style guide to help you feel ready and prepared for your session so you can get the most out of your photos. Then, I can take care of the rest! Your only job will be to show up, relax and be yourself.

We are creating a memory of you and your family and I want you to choose clothing that reflects who you are as a person and makes you feel beautiful and confident. The following are my personal recommendations and I’m happy to help you select the best clothing for your session. These are by no means rules and I encourage you to put as much of your personality into your clothing selection as possible.

Let’s Get Started!

Family standing on dirt road. Mom and dad kiss. Kids all snuggle and look at each other.

Step 1: Start with mom.
Mom’s outfit usually sets the tone for the photos. I will always lean towards maxi dresses that move, but choose something you’re comfortable in.

Step 2: Choose a color palette.
Choose a color palette that resonates with Mom's outfit, embracing 2-3 coordinating colors and adding in neutrals to keep things from being too matchy matchy. You want a color palette that has everyone with a unique look but still looking cohesive. I always lean towards earth tones. Embrace rich browns, warm oranges, deep greens, and rustic yellows. These tones will infuse your photos with a grounded and serene atmosphere, mirroring the beauty of nature.

Step 3: Add textures and patterns
Don’t be afraid to add subtle patterns. They add depth and interest to photos. Adding textures is also very important. Examples of texture include chambray, faux fur, chunky knits, lace, tweed, wool, etc.

Step 4: Accessorize
All the little details matter. Statement rings. Hats. Scarves.

Step 5: Don’t forget about the shoes!
Shoes can make or break an outfit. Keep them simple and neutral. In summer, brown, natural sandals. In the winter, boots always work.

Styling DOs

  • Natural fabrics that are comfortable, move and have texture

  • Flowy dresses and skirts photograph movement and light really well and I always recommend them! Longer is usually better when you have kids so you can move around easier.

  • Earth tones

  • Hair down is always the most fun because it’s another way to show movement. Don’t be afraid of the wind! Embrace it :)

  • Natural white versus pure white

  • Chambray blue instead of navy or sky blue

  • Statement rings and jewelry

  • Layering- belts, dusters, beanies, vests, etc

  • Nude color undergarments if dresses are sheer

  • Variety of patterns and textures

  • Warm tones with warm tones and cool tones with cool tones

  • Henleys, v-necks

  • Neutral shoes or bare feet

Styling DON’Ts

  • Stiff fabrics

  • Thin stripes or plaids: These distort in printed photos and appear zig-zaggy

  • Polo shirts

  • Matchy matchy

  • Shoes that you won’t be able to walk around in

  • Super bright nail polish

  • Big bulky watches

  • Jewelry that needs constant adjusting

  • Baseball hats, sunglasses, logos

  • Short, fitted dresses that don’t move

  • Transitional lenses
