How to prepare for a family photography session

A family photography session is the perfect way to capture your family’s unique bond and make lasting memories that you can cherish forever.  From picking out the right photographer, choosing a location, to deciding what to wear, here are some tips on how to plan and prepare for the perfect family photography session!

Find the right professional photographer

When searching for the perfect photographer to capture your family memories, style is everything. Do you want more of a posed, traditional look or a more candid style? Are you looking for a lot of direction during the session or would you prefer it to be photographic flow that captures natural moments? Taking time to review photos from a potential photographer can help you decide which one aligns with your vision for the pictures!

Choose an appropriate location.

First, find the perfect spot for your family photography session. Your photographer should have a list of some of their favorite locations to work in, but choosing a location that has special meaning to you is also an option. Is there a special park where you have always played with your kids? A special tree? Outside of one of your favorite museums? Right on your front porch of your house where you raised your babies?

Discuss your desired style and vision.

Communicating your desired style and vision to the photographer is essential before any shoot. I always send out a questionnaire to clients to make sure I have a good idea of what their vision is.  Discuss ideas such as whether you prefer indoor or outdoor, prefer brighter colors or natural tones, more candid poses or more posed. What is that one photo you have to have? Being clear on what your family wants will make the session go smoother and ensure that all expectations are met.

Decide on what to wear

When selecting the outfits for your family photography session, opt for timeless garments in neutral colors and simple styles. Additionally, accessorize with hats, bonnets, scarves, bold jewelry. I consider texture just as important as colors so make sure to add in a variety of fabrics. Consider your environment for inspiration but remember that simplicity is always key!

Create a comfortable atmosphere for everyone.

One of the most elementary yet essential tips for photoshoots is ensuring that everyone feels comfortable and relaxed. I always say that if you don’t feel relaxed, you’re not going to look relaxes. Sometimes people try to suffer for the pose and it’s not worth it. Tell your photographer if you’re not feeling comfortable. Always try to begin your session by establishing a warm rapport with your photographer before progressing to any physical posing, especially if you have small children. Don’t be afraid of taking plenty of breaks throughout the session for snacks, drinks, and conversations. Make sure your family is having fun as opposed to feeling stressed and tense as that will be reflected in the photos themselves.

Enjoy it!

During your family session, don’t forget to relax and have fun! While it can be intimidating at first, remember that you want to capture your family’s true personalities and interactions. Let the kids explore; let them jump and play and run around so that all those precious personalities show through in the photos. Be yourselves and enjoy the moment while making lasting memories together. When you look back at your photos, you want to remember a precious time with your family.
